Plants are one of our favorite things at Style + Dwell. But if we’re being real honest, being a plant mom can be real frustrating. They’re not always the best communicators, their specific needs vary, and sometimes try as we might they just don’t make it.
However, there are some things you can do to hedge your bets (bad plant joke we know) But our favorite tips will hopefully help you avoid the same mistakes we’ve made – save you time, money, and frustration.
Plan it out:
This is probably our biggest tip. Whether you’re picking out houseplants, or making DIY landscaping plans – really research what type of plants will do well in your space. The proper amount of sunlight + water is huge, as too much or too little will determine how well your green friend does. There’s all kinds of information online, or your local nursery is a fabulous resource too. For our readers local to Minneapolis our friends at Tangletown Gardens are experts in this area.
Where to buy:
Once you’ve selected your chosen plants, think about how you’re going to source them. Ideally we like to buy all our plants from a local nursery, as they stock plants that are native to your area and provide the most personalized service. Another newer option is using a delivery service. It’s no secret that we love anything that magically appears on our doorstep, and this can be a huge time saver! For easy to grow houseplants here’s a few options: Bloomscape, The Sill, and Garden Goods Direct. For outdoor plants, more and more nurseries and garden centers are offering delivery for plants, shrubs, and trees.
Make it kid friendly:
Getting the little ones involved helps give them an early start on getting their green thumb, and makes for a great family activity! For the outdoors, how about incorporating a fairy garden or a beautiful swing into your landscaping? These little touches make a landscape interesting, and can be a great compromise to a huge play set. Have a budding farmer…a vegetable garden can be so much fun! It can be as simple as a tomato plant or as involved as an all out veggie garden. Whatever the scope, they always seem more inclined to actually eat said veggies- which is a huge plus!
Indoors or outdoor plants are great for our health, and overall mood. Find what works for you, as no matter your skill level, there’s something for everyone.
Happy gardening!
Love,
Ashley + Lindsay
