It’s such a bittersweet moment when your youngest child has outgrown their crib, and they’re ready for a “big bed.” When my two and a half year old daughter began climbing out of her crib, we knew it was time to make the switch and give her a room refresh: nursery to big kid room. I spent hours debating what size bed to upgrade her to. Toddler bed, twin, full, queen – how does anyone decide?! Ultimately it came down to the fact that her room is large enough to have a queen. I also spotted an insane deal on the bed – decision made 🙌.
Whenever I start making changes to a room, and I’m contemplating a big purchase – I always try to go by a ’10 year rule.’ In designing my little girl’s room, I wanted pieces that would hopefully last her through her teen years. I’m sure the accessions will be swapped out, but hoping the main pieces stay 😉.
The Bed
We decided on a queen bed for several reasons, and before it arrive I was worried it would be way too big for my little girl. However, I’m amazed at how easily a two year old can take up an entire bed. Once 7 babies/ stuffies, 2 blankies, and 3 pillows are added – there isn’t much room for anything else 🤣. After much searching, I found an insane deal on this bed (that headboard!). Sadly, it’s sold out at Slumberland, but it’s available elsewhere, just at a much higher price.
All in the Details
Accessorizing this room turned out to be really fun! I had quite a few of the throw pillows, I ordered this cute and oh so soft Pom Pom bedding, and swapped out her door hardware. I love the warmth of satin brass, and Emtek has just launched this cool new Spoke knob that I paired with the modern rectangular rosette. I also re-arranged her gallery wall, and I love how it’s a mix of family heirlooms alongside more whimsical items. For the finishing touch, of course I added a plant.
Storage Solutions
A few months back we installed a custom closet in her room. Wow, did that ever make a difference! We added drawers in the closet, which eliminated the need for a dresser in her room – freeing up so much space! We also added in some shelving to the main part of her room, with open store underneath for toys. She can easily grab her toys (and hopefully) put them away when done playing.
I hope you enjoyed this little update of my daughter’s room! One thing is for sure, she loves being done with her crib (even if mom doesn’t). We’re still working out some of the kinks with this new found freedom, but all things considered – so far so good.
If you’re working on any room refreshes we’d love to hear about them. With everyone spending so much more time at home during these times, it’s so rewarding to make a few changes and have a new “view” in a old room.
