Why is it that out of all the rooms in a house the bedroom is usually the last to receive some styling and can seem perpetually in disarray? We spend more time in this room than anywhere else (albeit most of that time were sound asleep), but nevertheless this room should feel like a retreat with a designated place for everything.
We dreamt up two fabulous bedroom layouts and sourced our favorite pieces from Joss and Main. While the two are stylistically different, the core elements remain the same. We’ve also outlined our favorite tips below so you can easily create your own stylish + organized bedroom oasis.
Minimal + Cozy
This space embodies everything we love at Style + Dwell. Clean lines, natural elements, and some black punctuation to balance it all out. You all know we love great storage solutions, and having a large dresser filled with file folded clothes makes our hearts oh so happy!
Bohemian + Modern
The bohemian vibe is another one of our favorites. It adds some whimsical elements with the rug and beaded chandelier, but also brings in modern touches with brushed brass and the use of organic materials.
The Details
Ok so onto the good stuff, how to bring all these items together into one cohesive room. We’ll take you item by item, and hopefully when you’re done reading you’ll be on your way to do a little bedroom tweaking or a full overhaul.
Storage Essentials: Bedrooms house more items than just about any other room. In your closet having a mix of baskets for dedicated items can be a great cost savings solution vs. expensive built ins. Baskets can be great for items like: workout clothes, shorts, swimsuits, and clutches- just to name a few! We also find many people have more shoes than they have storage. An aesthetically pleasing shoe rack can make a huge difference.
The Nightstand: The height should be similar to the top of your mattress. While we love the look of styled nightstand with open shelving, these aren’t the best choice in terms of organization. You’ll thank us later when you don’t have to worry about hiding cords, or you’re looking for a place to store your nighttime essentials.
The Dresser: These are the storage workhorses in a bedroom. If you have the space go for a large dresser. This will free up your closet real estate, and we find most people have more items that need to be folded vs. on a hanger.
The Bed: Whether you choose metal, wood, or upholstered make sure your #1 priority is determining if it’s a good fit for you and your family. For example, I had a wooden headboard for years and loathed the thing because I love to sit up and read. Finally I purchased a upholstered one, and then wondered why it took me so darn long!
The Rug: Getting out of bed with a cozy rug underfoot is pretty much the best thing ever. We get a lot of questions about the sizing of a bedroom rug. In general you always want to err on the side of larger vs smaller. An 8 x 10 is a universal size as it will work well with a queen or a king size bed. For a queen a 6 x9 will certainly work, and for a king a 9 x 11 is a good option if you have the room.
The Bench: having a place to sit to put on your socks or even some extra space to fold laundry can be oh so nice. Choosing a bench with storage is a great way to maximize space in a smaller bedroom.
The Blanket Ladder: We’re a sucker for a beautiful ladder where form meets function. These are perfect for an extra throw blanket. For even more styling options check out “blanket ladders styled 5 ways.“
The Plant: You didn’t think we’d forget about our favorite green things did you?! While we’d choose a live plant any day over a faux, a bedroom can be a great place as usually light is low and it can be difficult to get a plant to do well.
The Decor: Don’t forget about those items that make your space cozy + give it personality. Fun accent pillows, a large mirror, and beautiful lamps for your nightstands can make a giant impact.
Always remember with any design or organizing project there isn’t a “right” or “wrong.” We hope our tips are helpful, but ultimately your unique perspective is what makes the space interesting and truly yours!
Love,
Ashley + Lindsay
