You all may remember that for the past few months I’ve been sharing a desk space with the rest of my family. Well, I’ve finally reached my breaking point, and need my own space! Don’t get me wrong, I’m a pretty good sharer, but the family kitchen desk has gotten too crowded with everyone at home. So I went on the hunt for the perfect place to set up shop in another part of the house. And along the way I discovered that you can create a home office- in just about any space!
Where to Set Up
Everyone has different needs in a workspace: some need total privacy and quite, while others prefer background noise. I’m in the first group, and tend to get easily distracted. When I started looking around for a place that I could carve out for an office nook, it soon became obvious that it would have to be my bedroom. Honestly there weren’t a ton of choices + it’s removed from the hustle of the house and has a door – done!
Finding a Desk
At first, I just used an old table that we had in storage. I wanted to make sure that I even liked working out of my bedroom before investing in a desk. However, due to the size being all wrong + a total lack of storage, it became clear the table needed to go. The good news from the “table experiment” is that I discovered I actually liked working in my room. Onto the hunt for the perfect desk that didn’t take up much space, was aesthetically pleasing, and had tons of storage.
Once I started looking I found that our friends at The Container Store have some great options. Did you all know you can design your own desk with them?! It’s really simple using the Elfa desk designer (bonus: they’re currently 30% off)! There’s numerous options + finishes to get a result that’s perfect for you. I chose to maximize storage with 4 white mesh drawers on either side of the desk, and selected the “driftwood” color for the top. The desk was super easy to put together, and I could’t be more pleased with the result!
Finishing Touches
Once the new desk was in place, it was immediately a big improvement over the old table. However, the space still didn’t feel complete or purposeful. To make the workstation mesh with the rest of the room’s aesthetic, I decided to create a gallery wall. We have an entire post dedicated to tips on creating a gallery wall, and you may be surprised at how easy there are!
The completed space honestly makes me SO happy! What I thought of initially as a temporary solution, has turned into a space that I can call “my own” and I love having this little retreat. Which just goes to show: you can create a home office – in just about any space!
Best wishes putting together your dream office,
Ashley + Lindsay
